Extracranial germ cell tumors (GCTs) are rare cancers that originate from germ cells, typically found in the testes or ovaries but can occur in other parts of the body. These tumors can develop in locations such as the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, or sacrococcygeal region. While they are predominantly seen in children and young adults, they can occur at any age. Research in this area focuses on understanding the genetic and molecular mechanisms driving the development of these tumors, improving diagnostic techniques, and refining treatment strategies. Multimodal approaches incorporating surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy have improved survival rates, particularly in localized disease. However, challenges remain in managing metastatic or recurrent cases, highlighting the ongoing need for innovative therapies and personalized treatment approaches in the realm of cancer research.
