Title : Associated factors to practice of breast cancer screening among women in Parakou at 2021
Abstract:
Introduction: The integration of breast cancer screening into daily clinical care leads to an early diagnosis and reduces its mortality. However, many women are reluctant and do not get tested. Objective To study the factors associated with the practice of breast cancer screening (PBCS) among women in Parakou in 2021.
Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study with an analytical aim concerning adult women living in Parakou, selected by the random cluster survey. The dependent variable was the PBCS; the independent variables were individual, sociocultural and organizational. The data collection was done by interview using a questionnaire. The prevalence ratio with its confidence interval was used to search for associations.
Results: The prevalence of PBCS among the 375 participants was 55.5% (CI95% = [50,0%-61,0%]). The decision-making power in health care matters, held by the parents (p= 0.006) was unfavorable to the PBCS while the level of primary (p= 0.036) and secondary education (p= 0.001), knowledge of screening methods (p=0.007), information on screening programs and projects (p= 0.020) and participation in these programs (p= 0.009), satisfactory assessment of the availability of nursing staff (p = 0.003) were unfavorable for PBCS.
Conclusion: Actions are needed to promote and increase women's participation in breast cancer screening.
